The box was a real tour de force, and a collector's item in its own right. It was on par with the cork-covered box that housed the first Nautilus, and the moon-cratered boxes where the 1969 Omega Speedmaster Tribute to Apollo XI watch was displayed. It was a truly stunning box, inspired by a piece of ancient art in the British Museum. Midas Stamnos is a lidded vessel that combines the characteristics of an amphora and vase. It was made around 440 BC. The black background has red figures showing Silenus being led to Midas. The incident recorded on the two-and-a-half-millennia-old stamnos is the moment at which the satyr Silenus, found drunk by peasants, is brought before the Phrygian monarch Midas, who recognises him as the teacher of Dionysus and treats him honourably, extending several days of hospitality before returning him to Dionysus who, in thanks, grants Midas the famous touch that turns all to gold. Cellini's range was at its most prolific in the 1970s. The King Midas, interpreted into a variety different styles and shapes, became a mainstay of the family.
